Memorial Service Planned for June 22
Edwin “Ed” Guiles, former chairman and CEO of San Diego Gas & Electric
(SDG&E) and Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) and devoted family man, passed away Friday, June 7. He was 69.
Colleagues, friends and
family alike say they will remember Guiles for his warmth and incredible ability to make everyone feel competent and empowered.
He is described as honest, fair and a leader who knew everyone’s name and truly cared about their families.
“I admire Ed for
not just his ability to be an incredible leader but for his devotion to his family,” says Jeff Martin, CEO and chairman
of Sempra Energy. “If you ever ask anyone about Ed, you will hear about how much he cared about other people –
his family, employees and his community and doing what was right for the company and our customers.”
His ability to relate to employees at every level is attributed to the range of jobs he held in engineering, power-plant
management, natural gas operations, customer service, and business planning and budgeting.
Scott Drury, president
of SDG&E reflects, “He shaped the careers of many of us here at SDG&E. Ed could walk into any room and know
everyone by name. He was a selfless leader who cared greatly about people.”
Guiles joined SDG&E as a printing services supervisor
in 1972 and rose in the company ranks, retiring in 2009 as executive vice president of corporate development for Sempra Energy.
Before that, Guiles was
chairman and CEO of SDG&E and SoCalGas, Sempra Energy’s California regulated utilities, from 2000 to 2006. Prior
to that role, he was president of SDG&E from 1997 to 2000. He also served as executive vice president of Enova Corporation,
the former parent company of SDG&E, from January to June 1998.
Prior to that role, Guiles was senior vice president of Enova
Corporation from January to December 1997. In this role, he oversaw the regulatory process and transition planning for the
merger of Enova Corporation and Pacific Enterprises.
From 1993 to 1997, Guiles served as senior vice president of Energy Supply for SDG&E,
overseeing the company’s procurement, generation and transmission of electricity and natural gas. These duties included
operation of the company’s power plants, as well as administration of its 20 percent ownership of the San Onofre
Nuclear Generating Station. Guiles was also responsible for the company’s natural gas pipeline transmission system.
Guiles earned a bachelor’s
degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Arizona and graduated from the executive programs at the University
of Southern California and the Edison Electric Institute.
Guiles also served as a member of the board of directors of Cubic Corporation and
California Water Service Group at the time of his passing.
He is survived by Sharon, his wife of 40 years,
his sons Edwin II (Eddie) and Robert, Robert’s wife Erika and his two grandsons, Carter and
Logan, who will miss him greatly.
